Introduction:

The topics in this exciting course lend themselves to studying and engaging with the business world in a variety of contexts (e.g. large/small, UK focused/global, service/manufacturing) and consider the factors such as the importance of business in relation to decision making. The interrelated nature of business activities and how they affect competitiveness, the competitive environment and the markets in which businesses operate, the influence of functional decisions and plans including ethical and environmental issues, the factors that might determine whether a decision is successful e.g. the quality of data and the degree of uncertainty, how technology is changing the way decisions are made and how businesses operate and compete, the impact on stakeholders of functional decisions and their response to such decisions.

This course will further encourage students to analyse the use of non-quantitative and quantitative data in decision making (including the interpretation of index numbers and calculations such as ratios and percentages).

 Where does it Lead to?

Business is a versatile subject that can not only lead to a career in the business world, financial services or the banking industry. It can lead towards a career in marketing and even education.

 Course Detail:

Business is a two year Linear course. All examinations will take place at the end of the second year of the course.

Assessment Details: 3 x 2 hour written papers each of which is worth 33% of the final grade.

Marketing, people and global businesses

 

·         Externally assessed

·         35% of the total qualification

·         Duration: 2 hrs

·         100 marks

 

Paper 1 will assess marketing, people and global businesses. Questions will be drawn from Themes 1 and 4, and from local, national and global contexts.

 

 

Sections A and B each comprise one data response questions broken down into a number of parts, including one extended open-response question.

Business activities, decisions and strategy

 

·         Externally assessed

·         35% of the total qualification

·         Duration: 2 hrs

·         100 marks

 

Paper 2 will assess business finance and operations, business decision and strategy. Questions will be drawn from Themes 2 and 3, and from local, national and global contexts.

 

Sections A and B each comprise one data response questions broken down into a number of parts, including one extended open-response question.

Investigating business in a competitive environment

 

·         Externally assessed

·         30% of the total qualification

·         Duration: 2 hrs

·         100 marks

 

Paper 3 will assess content across all four themes.

There will be a pre-released context document issued that will focus on a broad context, such as an industry or market in which a businesses operate.

 

The paper will contain unseen stimulus materials comprising of quantitate and qualitative evidence. Students are required to apply their knowledge and understanding from Themes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
