Duke of Edinburgh Award
Duke of Edinburgh has been run successfully at Slough and Eton for over 6 years and has become a popular and oversubscribed school activity. The concept of the DofE is simple – anyone aged between 14 and 25 can take part in a programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Here at Slough and Eton we offer the Bronze Award (year 10) and Silver Award (Year 12) DofE award programmes.
There are four sections students will need to complete in order to achieve their full award.
With assistance from our staff, participants select and set objectives in each of the following areas:
- Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
- Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
- Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
- Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey.
Each section must be done for a minimum period of time. It must be monitored and then assessed by someone with knowledge of that particular activity to achieve an Award. Each progressive level demands more time and commitment from participants. This is all tracked and recorded on the online platform students are enrolled on called eDofE.
Participation in the DofE is seen as an important component of the broader education that is offered at Slough and Eton. We are an Independent Licenced Centre for DofE and we have an experienced staff team who run and support the DofE programme.
School sports and clubs can all contribute towards a DofE Award. School provides training and assessment opportunities for the Expedition section too. At Bronze level this occurs locally, near Reading at in the Chilterns. At Silver level we have used Cheddar Gorge and South Downs areas.
