Science Sixth Form:
Health and Social care:
• Requirements: 5 GCSE’s Grade C and above.
The course entails studying human growth and development and is suited for students
interested in a career in health and social care or a degree in this topic.
The course comprises of 100% practical and written coursework.
• Care Requirements: 4 GCSE grade D
Students, who wish to work in health and social care and are interested in Human
development and care needs, will be suited for this course. Those wishing to carry
this forward to further education can do so as it leads on to a NVQ level 3 in care.
This course comprises 100% coursework and requires a work placement.
• BTEC introductory diploma requirements 4 GCSE grades E. Suitable for those who
wish to go onto work in care looking after people young and old. Pupils will study
human development and relationships.
The course comprises of 100% coursework.
Child care and education:
• (CACHE diploma) Requirements: 4 GCSE grades C and above. The course is designed
for people wishing to work in an early years setting, with children aged from birth
to 8 years old. The diploma is 360 UCAS points and can lead to a degree in early
years care at University.
The course is made up of 9 assignments, 2 portfolio practical’s and training on
2 days during the week.
• CACHE certificate requirements: 4 GCSE’s grade D, suited for people as stated
above. This course leads to supervised employment in day nurseries or for those
wishing to go into further education the diploma in CACHE. Consists of 1 multiple
choices exam, coursework and 2 day’s training.
• CACHE foundation: 3 GCSE’s at E grade, as above, those wishing to go on to further
education will lead on to the CACHE certificate.
Applied Science:
This is an As / A2 course, the requirements of which are C GCSE grades and above
in English, Maths and Science. It is based on learning science based on acquiring
practical skills in the context of knowledge and understanding of basic scientific
concepts. With this you will be able to progress to further education courses such
as biomedical science.
The course assessment is 67% coursework and 33% written exam.
BTEC National in Applied Forensic Science:
Requirements for this course are C grades in Science and English and a B grade in
Maths. The course covers a wide range of activities which allows students to become
well equipped in practical skills and develop knowledge and understanding in forensic
science. The course is equivalent to one A level which can be used to progress onto
higher education or enter employment in the forensic science area.

Applied Medical Science BTEC National Diploma:
You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C which must include English and Maths. This
is a two year vocational course for students who wish to work or study in medical
related areas. It comprises of five core units based on scientific principals and
laboratory organization.
Assessment is mainly by coursework which is presented in a portfolio. There is an
externally assessed unit.
