Option Subject Pathways
There are two pathways on offer at Key Stage 4 within Physical Education. GCSE P.E. for the pupils who perform well in examinations and BTEC P.E. for those who prefer to complete coursework week by week in assignment format. To determine which route pupils take an examination is sat by all pupils, with the result determining their future qualification.
Both the BTEC and GCSE provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain a greater understanding of the theory behind factors that affect performance and participation in physical activities. During the two year course there is the opportunity to participate in a huge range of sports to develop the skills used in each activity, improve tactical performance and improving an individual’s technique and understanding of assessment through coaching and officiating.
For GCSE the final grading is based on 2 components-
60% - Practical performance through 4 assessments from at least 2 skills areas (Outwitting opponents, Accurate Replication, Exploring and communication ideas, concepts and emotions, Performing at maximal levels, Identifying and solving problems and Exercising safely and effectively). Candidates can be assessed through the roles of Player/Performer, Organiser, Leader/Coach, Choreographer and Official.
40% Theory through a one and a half hour written paper, inclusive of short answer questions, some multiple choice questions and a pre-release scenario longer answer section.
For BTEC the final grade is based on the pupil’s assignments, which are handed in throughout the duration of the course and can be re-submitted after improvements have been made. There are three grades achievable pass (equivalent to a C grade at GCSE), merit (B grade) and distinction (A grade).
The units covered in BTEC P.E. are
Unit 1—Fitness testing and Training
Unit 2—Practical lessons
Unit 4—Anatomy and Physiology
Unit 10– Nutrition for sports performance
Students who wish to consider this option at Key Stage 4 should have displayed a positive attitude to sport in Years 7-9, played for a club and/or a school team and possess the organisational skills to bring the correct kit and equipment to each lesson.
