Geography Key Stage 4

Geography helps you to understand the interactions between humans and their physical environment. The Geography GCSE aims to give you a wider knowledge of the world around them and teach you transferable skills that can be used in other subjects.

Geography is a well recognised qualification in industry as you learn skills that can be applied in many situations.  Many geographers go on to jobs in conservation, town planning, accountancy, law, and many more.

At KS4 year 11 pupils currently study the OCR Avery Hill syllabus.  This consists of 4 units and 2 pieces of coursework.
The 4 units are

  • People and place
  • People, work and development
  • Climate, the environment and people
  • Water, landforms and people

The 2 pieces of coursework that they carry out are a 4 page report on the effects of acid Rain on the coniferous ecosystems in Scandinavia and a coastal study on Swanage Bay.

The pupils sit 2 exam papers in June.  The first paper tests knowledge and the second is a decision making paper where pupils have to decide how to deal with a problem in the most sustainable way.

In year 10 we will follow the new WJEC specification.  This consists of 3 themes

  • Theme 1: Challenges of Living in a Built Environment
  • Theme 2: People and the Natural World Interactions
  • Theme 3: People Work and Development

The year 10’s have to complete 2 pieces of controlled assessment which is done in exam conditions in school.

Student Achievements

The percentage of 5 A*- C has risen the last 2 years running, with
2 pupils gaining A* grades in 2007, and an overall 50% A*-C in 2009.

This is encouraging the current geography pupils to aim higher.
