Introduction. Learning English is fundamental to pupils’ ability to access the whole curriculum. However, it is so much more. The English curriculum at Slough and Eton is not only designed to challenge pupils but also to inspire, enthuse and empower. Pupils will study a variety of texts; a selection of non-fiction, fiction and poetry, but also various media texts including the moving image. Careful attention is given to cementing the foundations of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure in order to produce competent writers, able to adapt their style to suit audience and purpose.
Talented writers are encouraged to enter national competitions such as the Young Writers’ Competition and a number of pupils from Slough and Eton have had their work published.
Speaking and listening is a key element of English and communication. Activities designed to improve oral communication are integral to the English curriculum.
The English team work very closely with the EAL department to ensure that all children’s needs are met. Throughout key stage 3 the Ruth Miskin literacy programme is also available to enable pupils, who are either new to English or who have previously struggled, to progress through a phonics based programme tailored to their needs.
At Key Stage 4 most pupils study both English Language and English Literature and achieve two GCSE grades. At Key Stage 5 students study English Literature for A Level.
