Introduction

Slough and Eton is a culturally diverse college.  Over fifty languages are spoken at home among our pupils, who come from different ethnic backgrounds.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department’s aim is to support and extend the language development of all bilingual/multilingual pupils.  For early stage language learners, we endeavour to equip them with basic literacy skills through an intensive induction programme.  For more advanced language learners, we support them in their mainstream classrooms in order to ensure that they can fully access to the National curriculum subjects, particularly in English, Mathematics, Science and ICT.

Curriculum

Beginners Induction Programme (KS3)

Newly arrived English beginners attend an intensive induction programme for two to nine lessons per week.  A beginners’ induction programme is designed to provide pupils with the basic skills necessary for participation within the mainstream.  The programme covers topics within the NC strands.

Year 10 and Year 11 EAL options (KS4)

Double options (6 lessons) - EAL option offers two English courses and most pupils are selected by Head of EAL, English and SLT.

Course 1 – ESOL for School (Edexcel)

This course is for students who speak English as an additional language and who have arrived in the UK recently.  It has been produced especially for EAL students and covers topics such as work, leisure, health and community.  It has 3 components: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and is examined by Edexcel.  Pupils can be entered at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 with the possibility of being entered for Level 1 and 2 (GCSE equivalent) after two years.  It is a very practical course, designed to support English used in everyday life, such as the workplace.  It is compatible with ESOL courses taught at tertiary colleges.

Course 2 – IGCSE in ESL (International GCSE in English as a Second Language), to start in September 2012

IGCSE, English as a Second Language, is another option in Year 10 for more able EAL pupils.   The course is an international English language examination for foreign language speakers offered by Cambridge International Examination Board.(CIE)
A grade ‘C’ is accepted by most British universities for entry requirements. It is suitable for students who already have a reasonable foundation in English. It is language based and reinforces the GCSE English course.   In Year 10 it focuses on components being covered in GCSE English. For English Literature it includes Shakespeare, poetry from the anthology and a selection of novels. For GCSE English Paper One, different writing genres are developed and the examination rubric and question types are studied. Other areas targeted include: grammar, idiomatic language and vocabulary enrichment.

In Year 11 the functional skills needed to answer the IGCSE examination are taught and include note making, summary writing, form filling, listening, reading and writing. There are two papers:  Reading & Writing and Listening. The IGCSE examination has no coursework and no knowledge of English literature is required.

Entry to this examination gives EAL students the opportunity to gain an additional English language qualification, while at the same time reinforcing their work in GCSE English.

The EAL Department has four members of staff.

Mainstream Support

In addition to the above teaching groups, the department also provides language support for bilingual pupils with EAL needs within mainstream lessons.  Through partnership and support teaching a variety of differentiated learning resources can be introduced, increasing access for targeted pupils to the curriculum.

First priority for mainstream support is given to KS4 students in English and Maths. in order to allow them to achieve GCSE grades in these subjects.  Other subjects include Leisure and Tourism, Science and ICT.  Next priority is  KS3 English.
