Introduction. In the school Drama is a popular subject that allows students to improve their self-esteem, confidence, understanding and communication techniques. Drama enables students to be creative and experiment with different texts and improve their self expression. is closely linked to the study of English and Literature. Prior to the Year 9 SATs examinations the Drama curriculum is linked to the work In English, focusing on the Shakespeare play to be examined. The themes explored in Drama also overlap with those in Humanities subjects and Citizenship.
Each year more students take Drama as a GCSE demonstrating its popularity and the results also improve each year. Last year 53% achieved grades A* - C and 100% achieved grades A* - G.

ICT in the Department
We have access to a wide range of ICT and are able to do film and video editing with students can edit film and video material as well as recording and editing music in a designated studio. The school is a member of Creative Partnerships so benefits from projects with creative professionals which broadens the knowledge and expertise of the staff and students involved.
Dance is an area we are looking to develop. We have a small dance club that meets after school and has done well in dance festivals, choreographing their own work as well as having outside dance professionals coming in to work with them.

The Future. As a department we are looking to expand the extra curricular activities being offered including putting school productions. With the new build that the school has acquired the Drama department is moving into more of a Performing Arts area and we will have a standard hall with a conventional performing space as well a potential ‘found’ space performance area for a variety of performances. There is going to be a larger Drama Studio, a rehearsal room as well as the hall for work to take place in. The school is moving forward to being not just a secondary school, but a school that works in and with the community doing projects that involve the Adult Learning Centre and the students.
