Introduction

Art enables students to become visually literate, to develop skills and imagination and to become more visually aware of the world in which they live. The Art Department’s mission is to promote the enjoyment of Art, Craft and Design for all pupils. We encourage creativity, sensitivity, imagination, presentation skills and powers of observation. We aim to widen pupils’ cultural horizons by introducing them to the varied work of artists, craftspersons and designers from all cultures and enriching their personal resources.

The Art department follows a course which recognises and embraces the National Curriculum Attainment target for Art, Craft and Design. Throughout Key Stage 3, students develop skills in drawing, painting, printing, ceramics, ICT and 3 dimensional work. The use of sketch books is essential to complete weekly homework.

Many students continue to study Art to GCSE level. At Key Stage 4, students are responsible for researching and gathering information on a chosen topic and for selecting the most suitable media in which to work. Students have to produce a portfolio of artwork over the 2 years as well as undertaking a controlled test over 10 hours. Students currently follow the AQA exam board syllabus.

The art department is a fantastic space to work in! The converted gym houses 2 large, light, airy art rooms, a designated ceramics room, and sixth form studio. There is also an outdoor garden where students can also work. Resources in the department are excellent with computers in each art room as well as department laptops for pupil use. Students also have access to the department’s digital cameras and a large range of 2d and 3d materials.

The sixth form studio enables students to work in an environment similar to an Art College. They follow the BTEC course, choosing either the BTEC level 3 diploma over 2 years or the one  year BTEC level 3 subsidary diploma or level 2 diploma. This vocational course enables students to appreciate how artists and designers work in the ‘real world’. Where possible, they follow realistic briefs and learn how to meet the needs of their clients. They go on trips to gather their research, so far attending places such as Brighton, Alexandra Palace, The Tate Modern, The Hayward Gallery, Kew Gardens and local galleries. They have also spent 5 days on an art excursion to Barcelona. They learnt a lot about the art and culture of the city and had an amazing time!

Each year the department holds an Art exhibition in the Business Centre to showcase work from GCSE & Sixth form students. Students are mainly responsible for the design of the promotional materials and the organisation of the event.
